What is ADA website compliance?

ADA website compliance means making your website usable by people with disabilities, including people who are blind, have low vision, are deaf or cannot use a mouse, so it meets the accessibility expectations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In practice that means meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) at level AA, the standard demand letters, settlements and courts point to. Mint Media audits your site against WCAG 2.2 AA, fixes the issues in your code and monitors it over time, which helps reduce the risk of an accessibility complaint.

Received a demand letter?

Got an ADA demand letter or lawsuit? Here's how we help

Thousands of US businesses receive website accessibility demand letters every year, often from firms that send the same letter to many companies. It is stressful, but it is fixable. Your attorney handles the legal side. We handle the website.

  1. 01

    Talk to your attorney

Share the letter with your lawyer first. We are not lawyers and do not give legal advice, but we work alongside yours.

  2. 02

    Fast audit

We audit the pages named in the letter and your key templates, and document every WCAG issue we find, usually within a few business days.

  3. 03

    Fix the code

We fix the issues in priority order, starting with the ones that block people from using your site, buying or contacting you.

  4. 04

    Report and monitor

You get a written report of what we found and fixed, an accessibility statement, and monitoring so new issues are caught early.

What's included

Everything you need to make your website accessible

WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility audit

Automated scans catch the obvious issues, then a senior developer tests your key pages by hand, because scanners only find a fraction of real problems.

Accessibility remediation in code

We fix contrast, headings, labels, alt text, focus order, forms, menus and modals directly in your theme or code, so the fixes are permanent.

Keyboard and screen reader testing

We navigate your site with only a keyboard and with screen readers like VoiceOver and NVDA, the way your visitors actually do.

Accessibility statement and report

A clear audit report, a record of every fix, and an accessibility statement for your site that explains your commitment and how to reach you.

Ongoing accessibility monitoring

New pages, plugins and content can break accessibility. We rescan regularly and fix new issues before they turn into complaints.

Content and PDF guidance

Short, practical guidance for your team on alt text, headings, links, videos and PDFs, so new content stays accessible.

Overlays vs real fixes

Why we fix your code instead of adding an accessibility overlay

Accessibility overlays are widgets that add a toolbar to your site and promise instant compliance. They do not change the underlying code, many screen reader users find them harder to use, and businesses using them still receive demand letters.

Common questions

ADA website compliance questions, answered

Does my website need to be ADA compliant?

If your business serves the public in the United States, courts have often treated its website as covered by the ADA, especially when the site is tied to a physical location or sells goods and services. The ADA does not spell out a technical standard for private businesses, so demand letters and settlements usually point to WCAG AA. An accessible website also simply serves more customers. For a legal answer about your situation, ask your attorney.

How do I make my website ADA compliant?

Start with an audit against WCAG 2.2 AA that combines automated scans with manual keyboard and screen reader testing. Then fix the issues in your site's code, from color contrast and headings to form labels, focus order and alt text. Publish an accessibility statement and monitor the site as it changes. Mint Media handles all of these steps for you.

What is WCAG 2.2 AA?

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard for web accessibility, published by the W3C. Level AA is the middle level that most laws, settlements and policies reference. WCAG 2.2 is the current version. It includes everything in WCAG 2.1 plus a few new checks, so fixing to 2.2 AA also covers 2.1 AA.

Can I be sued if my website is not accessible?

Yes. Thousands of website accessibility lawsuits are filed in US courts every year, and many more businesses receive demand letters asking for a settlement. Small and mid-sized businesses are frequent targets. Fixing the barriers on your site helps reduce that risk, but no vendor can honestly guarantee you will never receive a claim.

Do accessibility overlays make a website ADA compliant?

No widget can make a website compliant on its own. Overlays add a layer on top of your site without fixing the underlying code, and businesses using them are still sued. In 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission ordered one major overlay vendor to pay $1 million over claims that its tool made websites compliant. Real accessibility comes from fixing the site itself.

How much does ADA website compliance cost?

It depends on the size of your site, the platform and how many issues the audit finds. A small brochure site costs far less than a large online store. We review your site and send a fixed-scope quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

FAQ

Accessibility FAQ

No, and be careful with anyone who does. Accessibility is judged by people, the standard keeps evolving and sites change every week. What we promise is honest work: a thorough WCAG 2.2 AA audit, real fixes in your code, documentation of what we did, and monitoring that helps reduce your risk over time.

No. Mint Media is a web development company, not a law firm. We handle the technical side of accessibility and are happy to work with your attorney, who should advise you on any demand letter, lawsuit or legal obligation.

WordPress, Shopify, Shopify Plus, Webflow and custom sites built with frameworks like Next.js. Because we fix the code rather than adding a widget, we work in whatever your site is built with.

Most audits take a few business days. Fixes for a small or mid-sized site usually take one to four weeks depending on the number and type of issues. If you are responding to a demand letter, tell us your deadline and we will prioritize the most important pages first.

Yes. Ontario's AODA requires many organizations to meet WCAG 2.0 AA on their public websites. Fixing to WCAG 2.2 AA covers those requirements too, and we work in English and French.

Yes. Accessibility checks and fixes can be added to any of our website maintenance plans, so the same senior developers who update your site also keep it accessible.

An accessibility statement is a page on your site that explains your commitment to accessibility, the standard you follow, any known limitations and how visitors can contact you if something does not work for them. We write one based on your audit.
